Diverse Just Like Me

Have you ever heard a senior executive say that they were looking for diversity in their organization as long as it looks, sounds and thinks like them?  Well, you’ve likely not heard them verbalize such a claim, but actions speak louder than words.  The ethnic, racial, and gender aspects of this have been decried - and rightfully so.  

What has received less attention is the oft lack of diversity in thought and style.  Just as destructive, but perhaps less observable on the surface.

When I look back at the times in my life when I’ve worked on unhealthy teams, the analogy that comes to mind is that dysfunction is like a poison.  Your team is sick, but you may not know it yet.  Then something happens and you try to dismiss it.  You justify it or explain it away.  Eventually though, there’s no escaping the reality that you have a sickness and it’s going to take a lot of medication and intervention to get rid of this thing that’s killing you.

Building Shared Commitment in Your Leadership Team

The senior team of any organization is like the foundation of a house. It is constructed to carry the structure above that is seen while resting appropriately on the bedrock of talent that truly supports the organization’s success.

Shared commitment is like the reinforcing bars placed in that foundation.

Lack of shared commitment among the team can compromise the integrity of the foundation and put undue pressure on the bedrock, causing the visible structure to show signs of distress. Even more things are revealed to be true about the reinforcing of that foundation when extreme external forces put added pressure on the bedrock or structure. Things can quickly crumble or fall.
